After giving us the dreamy escapism of “Mellow Cat”, which introduced Ester Skála to the world beyond her home in the Faroe Islands, the pop songwriter is bringing us back down to earth with a tale of heartbreak on new single “Become”. It’s out 21 February via TUTL, just a week or two before Ester supports Danish pop legends Aqua in the Faroese capital Tórshavn on 8 March.
On “Become”, Ester leans into the more serious side of her colourful world. While the melodies and synth instrumentation gleam and shimmer, the feeling is definitely more blue than the pinks of “Mellow Cat”. As with the greatest of pop songs (Robyn, Annie, Kylie etc), “Become” deals with sadness through lyrical heartbreak and betrayal dressed up in gorgeous melodies and a catchy chorus. It’s an anthem for anyone who’s ever experienced the painful realisation that a relationship may no longer be what they once dreamed it would be.
“This song tells the story of a girl who, at first, believed she had found her knight in shining armour,” says Ester. “What started as a fairy tale love quickly unravels, revealing painful truths beneath the surface. The narrative follows the emotional journey of a young woman whose once-promising relationship takes a devastating turn.”
Ester adds: “The song explores the tension and anguish of an uncertain and unstable relationship – where both individuals realise the emotional distance that has grown between them. It’s a poignant reflection on the fragile nature of love, and how a once-strong connection can quickly disintegrate, leaving both parties realising who they have become.”
